Joe Russo Turns 100

And Wellwishers Cheer

Joe Russo, who has been an anticipated sight for tourists and locals alike in downtown Cooperstown in recent summers, celebrated his 100th birthday with dozens of friends and family members this evening at Cooperstown’s Thanksgiving Home. Here he cuts his birthday cake as, behind him, his daughter Carmel Santoro, Guilford, Conn., and his son Vinnie and his wife Joan look on. Russo, who retired from the New York Times’ circulation department after a long career, can usually be found between Memorial Day and Labor Day on the bench in front of Mickey’s Place, his son’s baseball store at the corner of Main and Pioneer, greeting passersby.
