Cared For Almost 50 Foster Children

NEW LISBON – Marie Joan Musser, 80, who with her husband cared for almost 50 foster children on their farm near Garrattsville, passed away on Saturday, April 16, 2016, at the Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.

Born on Sept. 6, 1935, in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Alexander Newransky from Austria, and Anna (Chmiel) Newransky from Austria.  The family later moved to New Lisbon.

She married the late Alexander Joseph Musser, Sr., on Aug. 10, 1963, at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Morris. They were married for 51 years, until his passing.

With her husband, Marie was a homemaker, foster mother, home health aide and dairy farmer at the eight-sided barn just outside of Garrattsville. She and her husband raised their own children and opened their home to almost 50 foster children, from newborns to senior teens.

Survivors include seven children, Anne Marie Ellingham and her husband, Steve, of Rochester, Margaret Musser Bunnell and her husband, Ron, of Purcellville, Va., Kevin Musser and Teri Plows, of Burlington Flats, Alex Musser Jr. of Oneonta, Meredith Malone and Tony Espinoza, of Pottstown, Pa., Alison Kephart and her husband, John, of Alexandria, Va., and Nicole McLean and her husband, Mark, of Orange Beach, Ala., and five grandchildren, Kevin Musser Jr., Coral and Kayla, McLean, and Brady and Cole Plows.

Also her special children, Ellen Cobb and family, Tanya Barton and family, Sean Kirk and family, and Trista Rood and family; three neices Susan (Musser) Hotaling, Sally (Musser) Wilson, and Vicki Goldstein; two nephews Tad Goldstein and his family and Val Goldstein and his family.

Calling hours are 10-11 a.m. Saturday, April 23, in the narthyx of the Holy Cross Church in Morris. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m., with Father David Mickiewicz officiating. The burial will be at Hillington Cemetery, Morris.

Following the burial, family and friends will gather for a reception in the church parish hall.
Memorial contributions may be made to Fox Nursing Home, 1 Norton Ave., Oneonta, N.Y. 13820.

Arrangements are entrusted to Johnston Funeral Home, Morris.
