Northern Transfer Station

Ready, Reopening Monday

County Senior Planner Erik Scrivener, right, confers with Cobleskill Stone’s Bill Briscoe as paving was finished up this afternoon at the Northern Transfer Station, garbage drop-off point for Cooperstown and communities to the north. Driving the paver is Oneonta’s Ron Mattice. In the background is the new weigh station, which has been moved about 200 feet toward the back of the property to improve the circular flow of traffic. (Previously, the weigh station was on a berm, and one truck actually toppled over a few years ago.) The six-week project has required householders to drive up to Schuyler Lake to drop off their recyclables, and commercial haulers have had to drive to Oneonta. County Planning Director Karen Sullivan will be at the gate at 7 a.m. Monday to welcome the first customer and make sure all goes as smoothly as possible.  Scrivener said recycling bins will be place at the right as the driveway enters the main site, to simplify the process of dropping off recyclables.  Hours will be 7 a.m.-noon Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays, 8 a.m.-noon on Saturdays.   (Jim Kevlin /
