IN MEMORIAM: Olive Engelman, 88;
WWII Nurse Raised Family In Oneonta
ONEONTA – Olive Virginia LeDene Engelman, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed peacefully from this life on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016.
Her life was a rich one, filled with love from her husband, Peter, her children Peter, Paul and Susan, and their respective families (Karyn, Kyle and Claire, and Vicki, Jeremiah, Jessica and Jennifer).
Olive began her life on June 6, 1927, on Long Island, graduated from Adelphi University with a BS in nursing, and served in the Army Cadet Nursing Corp in World War II.
In 1967 the family moved to the idyllic Otsego Valley and began a new adventure. Olive adored the beauty and peace of this area and immersed herself in a variety of community and personal endeavors near Oneonta: Eastern Star, St. James Episcopal Church and St. James Manor, volunteer work at the Huntington Library, Fox Hospital and Catskill Hospice, courses at the Center for Extended Adult Learning at Hartwick College, and other activities too numerous to list.
She enjoyed traveling with Peter, and reading, crafting and spending time with friends, but mostly preferred quiet times with her family. Olive will be remembered as a kind, generous and involved woman who constantly gave her time, effort and love to others.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, at St. James Episcopal Church, Oneonta, NY, with a reception following at St. James Manor, Emmons.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or a charity of your choosing.
