 Tanning Salons Face Violations

In Oneonta, Richfield Springs

Tanning booths at Tanning Bed, a tanning salon at 76 Chestnut St., in Oneonta, and Main St. Styles, 112 Main St., Richfield Springs, were found to have safety violations and unsafe conditions after an inspection by the state Department of Health, according to a media release from Governor Cuomo’s office.

According to the release, over the past several months, inspectors from the Department of Health’s Oneonta District Office examined 41 devices at the two salons and others in Greene and Delaware counties, 29 of which were found to be unsafe.  The most common violation involved the use of UV bulbs that were not in accordance with the manufacturer’s labeling, but others included failure to maintain operator control over UV timers, an absence of warning labels, electrical hazards, failure to keep adequate customer records and using unapproved disinfectants.

In most cases, operators corrected the violations and re-opened the devices.

“DOH remains vigilant over the operation of UV devices to help ensure the safety of New Yorkers who continue to use tanning beds and booths,” said Dr. Howard Zucker, state health commissioner. “Indoor tanning, like any form of tanning, poses certain health risks. We need to make sure that it is being done as safely as possible.”
