Ruth Schweinfurth, 83

Passionate volunteer with local food bank, Susquehanna SPCA, others.

Ruth Schweinfurth

COOPERSTOWN – Long-time Cooperstown resident Ruth Schweinfurth passed away on June 23, 2021, after a brief struggle with cancer. She passed peacefully at her home, comforted by her loving daughters and her beloved dogs. She was 83 years young.

Ruth’s life’s work focused on improving the lives of others. She was passionate about nursing, her first calling, and equally passionate about her volunteer work in the community. Over the years, Ruth selflessly devoted countless hours to assisting area families at the local food bank (at its original location in the Cooperstown Library building) and to sorting and selling clothing and other items at the thrift shop that supports the Susquehanna SPCA, an organization of which she was especially fond.

Beyond her volunteer activities, Ruth contributed her friendly personality and tireless energy to a variety of jobs around town. Without exaggeration, wherever Ruth went in the community, she bumped into someone she knew. She also was an avid gardener and enjoyed many long hours outdoors tending her beautiful annuals and perennials, accompanied by her dogs. Ruth was kind and generous. She was dearly loved, and will be greatly missed, by many.

Ruth was predeceased by her devoted husband, Paul Schweinfurth. Ruth is survived by, and her memory is joyfully celebrated by, her loving daughters, Lisa Schweinfurth and Lynn Schweinfurth; her cherished granddaughter, Mackenzie Costley; and her dear son-in-law, Christopher Shawn; among other family members and friends.

Respecting Ruth’s preferences, immediate family members held a private burial at the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery, and no services will be held. In her memory, rather than send flowers, please leave flowers to grow, and make a donation in Ruth’s name to the Susquehanna SPCA.
