Swimming at Glimmerglass Still Off Limits
SPRINGFIELD—Glimmerglass State Park officials suspended swimming there on Friday, August 7 due to the discovery of a harmful algal bloom. As of this morning, the swimming area remains closed until the water quality improves, according to a notice on the park’s website.
The closure is necessary to protect public health and safety, park officials said, and visitors should seek alternate locations for swimming. The rest of the park remains open, including concessions, trails, the beach, playgrounds, etc., and the $7.00 vehicle use fee still applies.
According to the SUNY Oneonta Biological Field Station, weather and lake conditions are prime for continued development of HABs, “which may be intermittent and change quickly.” Lake users should check the water conditions before entering the water or allowing pets or children to do so, BFS officials caution.
