Charles Varney

COOPERSTOWN – Democrat Charles Varney, who lives in Cherry Valley and operates the Cooperstown Underground Barbershop on Main Street, plans to challenge county board Chairman David Bliss in the Nov. 2 elections, he announced today.

Bliss, a Republican, represents District 7, which includes the Village of Cooperstown east of the Susquehanna River, plus the towns of Middlefield, Roseboom and Cherry Valley.

“My announcement was the long and short of it,” he said.  “The county’s response to COVID has been lackluster at best, terrible at worst.”  He said county finances are being mismanaged and service “chipped away.”

‘A Few Potential Candidates’ Will

Run As Independents, Casale Says

Vince Casale

COOPERSTOWN – More Republican candidates then initially thought will be challenging Democrats this fall, county Republican Chairman Vince Casale said after Thurday evening’s AllOTSEGO.com report on petitions filed.

While it appeared only two county board seats would be contested  this fall, the GOP chair said “a few potential candidates” will file independent petitions to challenge Democrats in the Nov. 5 election.

“We’re not done yet,” Casale said.

While those candidates’ names could not appear on the Republican ballot line, they presumably could be endorsed and supported by the GOP County Committee.
