PHONE SCAM IN PROGRESS

Troopers: Beware Of

Callers Threatening

To Cut Off Electricity

State Police at Troop C are warning residents of a phone scam where the caller claims to be with NYSEG and threatens to cut off service.

Troopers have received several calls from businesspeople, who report callers demanding  immediately payment using a prepaid debit card, or service will be cut.

The suspected scammers also provide a call-back number with a recorded greeting similar to NYSEG’s.

Never trust anyone who calls you and asks you to make a payment using a prepaid card, the troopers cautioned.  If you have any questions about your bill, contact NYSEG directly.
