WCV deals Hawkeyes
first baseball loss

West Canada Valley scored four runs in the sixth inning to deal Cooperstown its first loss of the baseball season, 6-3, Wednesday, May 19, in Newport.

Cooperstown trailed 2-1 going into the sixth inning, with WCV’s Aiden Maxwell keeping the Hawkeye batters off guard. He struck out 12 batters in seven innings and pitched out of trouble twice early, with Cooperstown leaving a runner at third base in the second and third innings.

Kendall Haney scored Cooperstown’s first run, with a triple in the top of the first inning. He scored on Chris Ubner’s RBI out.

WCV got the run back in the bottom of the first inning, on two singles and an error, and took the lead, 2-1, in the third inning following three straight singles.

Haney and Ubner both singled in the top of the sixth inning. Alex Hascup followed with a double to give the Hawkeyes a 3-2 lead, but WCV rallied in the bottom of the inning.

Haney got the first out of the sixth inning, but then departed after issuing a walk. Ubner walked another batter then got a strikeout, but WCV rallied with two outs. Cole Maxwell doubled home both runs, and after another walk, Aiden Maxwell helped his cause with an RBI single to score two more runs.

Aiden Maxwell then finished the game with three straight outs in the top of the seventh inning for the win.

Haney went 3-for-3 with a double, triple and two runs scored.

Ubner took the loss for Cooperstown, (7-1, 2-1), which hosts Herkimer at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 21, at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown.
