Roe V. Wade

A letter was recently submitted stating that abortion is a constitutional right. Nowhere in the Constitution, nor any other founding document for that matter, is there given a right to murder. The Declaration of Independence states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Life is what the founders of our nation considered a constitutional right. And this right applies to an unborn baby in the womb.

I know that it took a while for those who wrote these documents to have their practice catch up with what they believed (as with slavery and women’s rights) but catch up they did. Today, minorities and women have more freedom in this nation than almost anywhere else. Is there still more to be done? Absolutely!

But back to the issue of abortion. The problem is this has become a political issue when it is, in fact, a moral one. Life begins at the moment of conception. Science now bears this out. And a baby in the womb needs the same protections as a bald eagle in the egg. We don’t need more abortions, we need more support for women who find themselves in a difficult situations. Let’s spend the millions of dollars on that and become a nation that holds life in high regard.

  1. You said ” women’s right” it is a “Women right” to have an abortion if she so chooses. It is not up to anyone else. Her and her alone shall have the right to do with her body any she see fit. Think of it this way. If she was rapped would you have her Carey it? If think hard on that. He gives life he takes it away also. Why don’t men get fixed? Why do they leave it up to the women? Why don’t they take on the responsibility as well? Don’t say that should have to. The world has changed we don’t live in the olden day. We live here and now. Equality

It was a common practice in England, the Colonies and the founding states, none of which restricted the right until 1821, when it was restricted after “the quickening.” The 14th Amendment protects the rights of those “born in the USA” not those “conceived.” The unborn have no rights under the Constitution. That’s the law, not religious mythology

  7. With all due respect, if you find abortion objectionable then you should absolutely not have one. Beyond that , I suggest that you leave any broader decisions to women whose lives are directly impacted. We don’t live in a theocracy, at least not yet.

  9. If you believe that abortion is immoral , by all means don’t have one. But your view should not preclude women from making choices about their futures. For the time being we still are not a theocracy, and as such you have no right to impose your moral judgement on others.
