ONEONTA – Dennis M. Carr, 54, the OHS teacher and coach who received an outpouring of support in his fight against cancer, passed away  peacefully at home Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016,, with his family by his side.

He was born July 28, 1961, in Oneonta, the son of Roger and Gloria (Brown) Carr.

Denny graduated from Oneonta High School, Class of 1979, and received a degree in education from SUNY Oswego in 1983.  Following graduation, Denny became a teacher at OHS where he taught technology for the past 30 years.

On April 5, 1986, Denny married Susan Swift at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, Norwich.

Denny loved working around the house, and he always had a project going outside, whether it was rebuilding his deck for the tenth time, or lifeguarding at his pool. He could fix anything with the help of his dad, and even built his own house.

Denny always enjoyed family camping trips, and vacations to the beach.

His true passion was coaching. For over 30 years he coached everything from Little League baseball, JV lacrosse, and every level of high school football.

Denny was a loving son, husband, father, brother, uncle and friend who will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his loving wife, Susan Carr of Oneonta; three children, Joshua Carr of Greensboro, N.C., Chad Carr and fiancé Brittany Shea of Boston, and Chelsea Carr of Oneonta; his parents, Roger and Gloria Carr of Oneonta; two brothers, Kevin Carr of Esperance and Tim and Jacky Carr of Oxford; his Aunt Norma (Bill) Slawson of Oneonta, and his Uncle Dale Carr of Oneonta; father-in-law Ken Swift of Amblerville; two sisters-in-law, Kathy (Joe) Stewart of Norwich and Julie Swift of South New Berlin; brother-in-law Joe (Marianne) Swift of Florida, as well as many loved aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother-in-law, Lee Swift, and his brother-in-law, Kevin Swift.

Calling hours will be noon-3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the Bookhout Funeral Home. There will be a private family gathering to celebrate Denny’s life at his home.
