IN MEMORIAM: Douglas J. Card, 91;

Edmeston, New Berlin Businessman

EDMESTON – Douglas J. Card, 91, of Edmeston, proprietor of Card’s Garage and Card’s Auto Parts here and in New Berlin, passed away Monday, Nov. 19, 2018, in Cooperstown,  surrounded by his loving family.

Doug was born on June 9, 1927, in New Berlin, the son of the late William and Marjorie Scott Card.

Doug was a Class of 1945 graduate of Edmeston Central School, and a 1955 graduate of Mohawk Valley Technical Institute with a degree in Business Science.

For many years, he managed his family’s business, Card’s Garage, until he opened Card’s Auto Parts in New Berlin, a business he operated until his retirement. He was a proud Navy veteran,  serving during the Korean Conflict.

Doug was a member of Second Baptist Church of Edmeston, Rotary Club, The American Legion, and the Edmeston Volunteer Fire department.

He is survived by his children Angela Benson of Edmeston, Phyllis (Ladd) Lawrence of Upper Jay, NY, Kathleen (Alan) Sheldon of Edmeston, and Roy “Jay” Whitaker of Keene, NH, grandchildren Caprice (Paul), Monica (Brandon), Matthew (Kathryn), Jason (Lauren), James (Adina), Hannah, Bianca, and Gabriel, great-grandchildren Mallory, Rachel (Andrew), Braymon, Tatum, Lukas, and Ireland, great-great-grand daughter Lacie-Ann.

In addition to his parents, Doug was pre-deceased by a brother Neal Card, and his wife of 58 years, Catherine Aloi Card, who passed on Dec. 31, 2016.

A celebration of Doug’s life will be at noon Saturday Nov. 24, at Delker & Terry Funeral Home, 30 South St., Edmeston, with Rev. Paul Eckert officiating. Calling hours will be 10 a.m.-noon prior to services at the funeral home.

Spring interment will be in the Edmeston Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Edmeston Emergency Squad or Edmeston Volunteer Fire Department in memory of Doug.
