One wall remained by the time the fire was doused.

OTEGO – A 76-year-old man fled a burning Otego home on 470 County Route 5 this morning but had no way to call 911, and the home was destroyed, state police at Troop C report.

Troopers from the Oneonta Barracks received the call at 1:09 a.m.

The elderly man, identified at Robert Carpenter, the sole occupant of the home, was spotted by a passerby, and that person called 911.

Carpenter, who left the home with only a “minimal amount of clothing,” was taken by CMT ambulance to Fox Hospital, where he was treated for exposure to cold.

Otego, Wells Bridge and West Oneonta responded to the scene.

Otego firefighters are working with county fire investigators to determine the cause of the fire.
