This is what east-bound drivers first came upon on passing the scene of the pileup late this afternoon. This road sign was snapped in the mayhem. Tow trucks from as far away as the Capital District – six at one point – seek to unglue the wreckage. The windshield of the Adirondack Trailways bus had been knocked out. It appeared the rig carrying cut lumber was the first to hit the bus. A tow track seeks to pull free the lead rig’s crumpled cab. A close-up of the lead rig’s cab. Smoke emanated from one of the semis – a tanker truck – but Lieutenant Larkin said it was from the powder-like cargo: There was no risk of fire. By day’s end, Schenevus’ first assistant fire chief Paul Neske was on to less-stressful tasks: making sure the firefighters at the scene had plenty of hot coffee, bottled water and hot pizza. In the foreground is Assistant Capt. Phil Harris.
