11th-Hour Push To Block

Administrator Job Fails

A last-ditch effort by county Rep. Ed Frazier, R-Unadilla, to block the new county-administrator position failed at the February meeting of the Otsego County Board of Representatives on the 5th. A resolution was introduced setting the salary at $100,000, and Frazier said the money can be better used. After lively debate, only Keith McCarty, R-East Springfield, voted against setting the salary level and advertising to fill the new position. The discussion begins at 1:50:31 on the videotape.  The county board also approved raising the county bed tax by 2 percent.  Seated next to Frazier are county Reps. Adrienne Martini and Clark Oliver, both Oneonta Democrats.  On the dias is County Attorney Ellen Coccoma.

If Not Allen Ruffles, Someone With SOME Of His Qualities

EDITORIAL If Not Allen Ruffles, Someone With SOME Of His Qualities The question was, “Do you think THEY will let the county administrator do the job?” They, of course, being the county Board of Representatives. They’re looking for someone who will allow them to do what THEY want to do more efficiently. The control of county government will remain in the hands of the 14 elected representatives,…

If You Want Public Office, You Ought To Say Why Publically

Editorial If You Want Public Office, You Ought To Say Why Publicly The county board’s Administration Committee set a poor precedent in deciding to interview candidates for state Sen.-elect Peter Oberacker’s District 6 seat in “executive session” – that is, in secret, out of the public view. The county attorney, Ellen Coccoma, last week advised the Admin Committee when it interviewed the Republican candidate, Jennifer Mickle, that whether to do so in public or not was optional, up to the reps. To close the door instead of opening it was the wrong way to go. It was bi-partisan poor judgment, too.…
