‘IRS Calls’ A Scam, Chief Says

COOPERSTOWN – Five Cooperstown senior citizens have reported receiving calls in recent days from people claiming to be IRS agents, according to Police Chief Michael Covert.

The callers claim payments must be made immediately or an arrest warrant will be issued.  “It’s a scam,” he said.

The scam, which was detailed in a talk given by Aiesha Battle, director of the Division of Consumer Protection, Oct. 23 in Oneonta and Cooperstown, is one of many that targets senior citizens.

The IRS will never call or threaten arrest for unpaid taxes.  If you do receive such a call, do not send money or give out banking information, Covert said.
