IN MEMORIAM:  Rodney Jones, 59; NYSEG Veteran

ONEONTA – Rodney Stephen Jones, 59, a 40-year NYSEG electrical field planner, passed away on Dec. 9, 2015, at Bassett Hospital.

He was born April 17, 1956, in Walton, the son of Richard and Catherine (Stanton) Jones.

Rodney graduated from Walton Central School, Class of 1974.  He went on to SUNY Morrisville and attained an associate degree in electrical engineering in May 1976.  He joined NYSEG in September 1976 and was working there at the time of his death.


In 1980, he married Bonnie Sue Rowe. Their son, Erik Stephen Jones, was born in 1988.  They shared 34 years of marriage.  Recently Rodney reconnected with his childhood friend, Nancy Rutherford Grotevant, previously of Walton, and was very happy in his new relationship.  

He is survived by his son, Erik, as well as his father, Richard Jones of Stamford; Nancy, Bonnie; nieces and nephews, Tori, Kevin and Corrina Rowe, Levi Jones and Rachel Cestone; his mother-in-law, Joyce Rowe; brother-in-law, Michael and Karen Rowe; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

 

He was predeceased by his mother, Catherine Jones; brother, Timothy Jones and father-in-law, Claude Rowe.

 

Rodney was a member of the Oneonta Sportsman Club, NRA, and in the past served on the Oneonta Planning Board for several years.  He enjoyed his muscle car, boating, camping and he was a great swimmer.

Calling hour will be noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15, with the funeral service beginning at 1 p.m., at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta.  The Rev. James Stain, pastor at the Riverside Alliance Church in Walton, is officiating.  Burial will follow at the Glenwood Cemetery in Oneonta.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in his honor be made to the Oneonta Sportsmans Club, 251 Rod and Gun Club Road, Oneonta, NY 13820 or to the West Oneonta Fire Department, 2865 Co. Hwy. 8, West Oneonta, NY 13861.
