Smith Family Cuts Cake On

Spurbeck’s 75th Anniversary

A few moments ago, the Smith family cuts the 75th birthday cake celebrating the three-quarter-century mark on Spurbeck's Grocery, Railroad and Leatherstocking, in Cooperstown. Proprietors Dorothy and Roger Spurbeck are third and fourth from left. Their children, from left, are Randy Smith, Cooperstown, daughter Laura Flint of Jay with her husband, Robin, Steve Smith, the local contractor, and his wife Sheri, and Marty Smith of Boston. Marty’s children, Amiya, 10, and Rowan, 8, are in the foreground. The store was founded by Roger Smith’s grandfather, Orlando Spurbeck, and then operated by his mother, Gertrude Spurbeck Smith. While a full service grocery, Spurbeck’s is particulary frequented for its lunchtime sandwiches and soups, its Palatine Cheese, cut from the roll, and 170 craft beers. (Jim Kevlin/AllOTSEGO.com)
