The Difference! Lord Exmouth sails to the Mediterranean with a powerful fleet—pays from 500 to 1,000 dollars apiece for the release of Christian captives and stipulates that in future, all European Christian prisoners (Americans being excluded) “shall not be consigned into slavery, but shall be treated with humanity until regularly exchanged.” Christopher Hughes, Jr. sails to Carthagena in a single frigate, and without paying a cent, obtains the release of all the Americans in slavery at that place, together with ten Englishmen, and several Frenchmen!

During the month of July 1916, the total number of pieces of mail handled by rural carriers from the Cooperstown, N.Y. post office was 50,176 weighing 9,065 pounds and 12 ounces. Number of families actually served: Route 1, 110; Route 2, 118; Route 3, 137; Route 4, 115; Route 5, 144. Closed Pouch Service: Carrier No. 2 carried 33 pouches to Middlefield, New York weighing a total of 913 pounds; from Middlefield, 25 pouches weighing 282 pounds.

When the Oneonta Indians meet the Romans on Doubleday Field, Cooperstown, Sunday afternoon, it will be the first regularly scheduled League game ever played on that historic spot. Oneonta and Rome are members of the Canadian-American League, one of the scrappiest in the Minors. With admission reduced to very moderate figures, the stands should be packed. Base line seats will be fifty cents; grandstand seats only 75 cents and both include the tax. All children under 12 are to be admitted free to the centerfield bleachers. There is plenty of free parking space in Cooperstown.

Richard F. Clancy of Syracuse, formerly of Cooperstown, announces the engagement of his daughter, Caroline M. Clancy, Syracuse, to Charles D. Calhoun, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman D. Calhoun of Cooperstown. Miss Clancy is also the daughter of the late Margaret M. Clancy. Miss Clancy is a graduate of the Most Holy Rosary High School, Syracuse, and is employed at Crouse, Hinds & Co. there. Mr. Calhoun is a graduate of Cooperstown High School and the State University Teachers’ College, Oneonta. He is presently teaching in the Chenango Forks School District. A November wedding is planned.

On Saturday, July 29, John Irvin, manager of The Otesaga Resort Hotel, awoke to find two cast iron beds lashed to either side of his front porch at his Lake Street home. On one bed was a figure that looked a lot like President Bush; loose chains lay on the other bed awaiting a customer. Signs nearby read: “Please Knock,” “Grand Opening,” and “Irvin’s Inn & Out.” The practical joke was perpetrated by Jane Forbes Clark.
