Rotary Golf Tourney Highlight
8-Year-Old Substitute
Takes Team To Victory
SPRINGFIELD – With the help of an 8-year-old, Team Schlather & Birch took home first place honors at the 2016 Cooperstown Rotary Foundation’s Lyn Edinger Memorial Golf Tournament, held Sunday September 18th at Meadow Links Golf Course.
At the last minute, team captain, Bob Schlather had a cancellation by one of his foursome. But fortunately team member Rodney Campbell brought along his 8 year old son Mason who more than held his own, and along with Earle Hayford, the foursome captured top honors in the Captain & Crew format. They each received a $50 gift certificate to local restaurants including Mel’s at 22, Bocca Osteria, New York Pizzeria and Alex’s Bistro.
For second place, Team Barraco led by team captain Bob Barraco with Marc Barraco, Bill Richards and Dick Hilts, each received a round of golf at Meadow Links Course.
A Rotary Induction bat and a sleeve of balls went to the third place foursome, Team Tillapaugh which lost their captain at the last minute but fortunately Pat McKenna filled in, along with Tim Parsons, Tim Feury and Frank Liberati. The Most Honest Foursome, for the team with the highest score, was won by family Team Ellsworth with Garrett, Charlie and Owen Ellsworth and Abigail Ellsworth Caspar. For their efforts they received gift certificates to Barnyard Swing, in order to improve their putting skills.
The Closest to the Pin contest, with the prize of a $25 gift certificate to Doubleday Cafe was won by Gary Kuch. In the Putting Contest, Frank Liberati with a putt within one inch of the cup, took 1st place honors and received an Ommegang three bottle variety pack and a gift certificate for a Rotary luncheon at The Otesaga. Marc Barraco placed second in the Putting Contest and won a box of golf balls and a gift certificate to a Rotary luncheon.
In addition to the businesses providing prize certificates, alphaFOLKS by Nate Katz, Bassett Healthcare, Bieritz Agency, Brewery Ommegang, Cantina de Salsa, Carefree Gardens, Cooperstown Distillery, Cooperstown General Store, Cooperstown Natural Foods, Cooperstown Wine & Spirits, Danny’s Market, Doubleday Cafe, Food Truck Cooperstown, Glimmerglass Opera, Hyde Hall, J&J Wine & Liquor, Karen Katz Jewelry, Key Bank, Meadow Links Golf Course, Mel’s at 22, Mohican Flowers, National Baseball Hall of Fame, Northern Eagle Beverage, Origins Café, Price Chopper, Rose & Kettle, Smith Ford, The Blue Mingo, Tops, Village Wine & Spirits and Willis Monie Books all contributed items for either the Awards Reception or Auction.
The Chair of the CRF, Ellen Tillapaugh, commented that the donors who contributed prizes, underwrote the Reception and sponsored course holes and the Putting Tournament were all fundamental to the success of the tournament.
They were recognized with signs on the course as well as in publicity and in the Tournament Program. In addition, Stewart’s Shop of Cooperstown provided hot dogs, ice tea, lemonade and delicious ice cream sundaes for the picnic reception.
he Cooperstown Rotary Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization provides funds and resources for community support within the framework of the goals and ideals of Rotary International, and has provided over $19,000 in support to various organizations in the past six years. The Foundation supports scholarships at Edmeston and Cooperstown schools, and international and local projects, including most recently, Friends Helping Friends.
