Paul W. Shelton, 93, WWII
Veteran In 32 Naval Battles
ONEONTA – Paul Wilson Shelton, 93, a World War II veteran who served on the USS Lexington aircraft carrier during 32 battles in the Pacific Theater, passed away Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Fox Hospital.
He was born May 18, 1923, in Warwick, Tenn., the son of the late Henry and Clarence (Cherry) Amos. Paul was raised in Woodville, Mississippi and graduated from Woodville High School.
He enlisted in the Navy just before Pearl Harbor Day and, assigned to the USS Lexington, was also involved in the development of radar.
While on leave in Boston, Paul met Jean Allen and they married during the war in San Francisco. After the war, he went on to MIT on the GI Bill and graduated with honors. He was called back up during the Korean Conflict because of his knowledge of radar.
Following the Korean Conflict, Paul and Jean moved to Long Island where he began working for Sperry Rand, inventing a diagnostic computer for the F-111 fighter jets.
Paul and Jean were married for 68 years before her death on Nov. 13, 2013.
Survivors include his daughter, Paula Jean (Christopher) Morelli of Freeport, L.I.; son, Robert Allen Shelton of Milford; granddaughter, Jessica Jean Shelton of Canajoharie.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Troy and Henry and two sisters, Gladys and Lucille.
