IN MEMORIAM: Emory A. Oeser Jr., 83;

Served In Airborne, Highway Department

CHERRY VALLEY – Emory A. Oeser Jr., 83, who served as a paratrooper in the elite 82nd Airborne Division and later spent his career with the county Highway Department, passed away peacefully at home on May 12, 2017, with his family at his side.

A life-long Cherry Valley resident, Emory was born Jan. 18, 1934, to Emory and Bertha Oeser.  He married Ruth Snyder on July 5, 1958.

His service with the 82nd Airborne inspired several grandsons followed in his footsteps, serving in the Army, Navy and Marines.  After 30 years with the county, he retired and worked with Harry Synder on the Middlefield Highway Department.

Emory’s greatest pleasures were his devoted wife and family, and the Great Outdoors.

He is survived by his loving wife Ruth and brother-in-law Harry (Kim) Snyder.  Also dear to his heart three children, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren:

  • Son Michael (Lynn) Oeser and family; Kristen (Jeff) Herrett, Shelby, Joseph and William; Michael (Autumn) Oeser, Isabella and Dominic; Matthew Oeser (Sarah); Ben (Lee Ellen) Oeser.
  • Daughter Lorel (Dean) Rathbun; Justin (Naomi) Luther, Justin and Taylor; Robert Luther; Allison Luther.
  • Daughter Donna (David) Beckingham; Trevor (Erin) Beckingham, Kayla; Zachary (Danyel) Beckingham, Tyler and Camylla, Brandon (Nicole) Beckingham and Emory.

Also nieces, Michelle (Mike) Stocking, Kim and son, Nathan Synder, Terry and Melissa, and other nieces and nephews and many close friends, including special companions John and Lisa, and a special thanks to Lyman Johnson for all his support.

Emory was strong, proud and a bit scary; but to his family and friends there was no one more devoted and endearing.

A celebration of Emory’s life by his family and friends will take place in early July.

Donations in Emory’s memory may be sent to Middlefield (NY) Baptist Church.
