Soldier Dies In Motorcycle Crash

Eric J. Merwin

DAVENPORT – Eric James Merwin, 20, of Davenport, died suddenly May 13, 2018, as the result of a motorcycle crash in El Paso, Texas, where he was stationed in the Army at Fort Bliss.

He was born Jan. 28, 1998, in Oneonta.  Eric attended the Northern Catskills Occupational Center in Grand Gorge and was a 2016 graduate of Charlotte Valley Central School. A private, he was assigned to the 2-13 Calvary Battalion, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team at Fort Bliss.

He is survived by grandparents, Douglas and Mildred Merwin of Davenport, who raised him, loved him, and always supported him in all walks of life; an aunt, Amy (Merwin) Butler of Davenport; mother, Lisa Merwin Utica; sister, Paige Merwin (Austin Sutton), Utica; brother, Devon Kupris, Davenport; niece, Hayden Sutton, Utica; cousins, Kaylyn Helmer, Afton, Alexis Helmer, Davenport, Shaelah Butler, Davenport; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Calling hours will be at 10 a.m. at Charlotte Valley Central School, , Davenport. A 1 p.m. memorial service will be followed by a full military burial ceremony in the Stamford Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Davenport Fire Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to Charlotte Valley Central School, c/o CVCS, 15611 State Highway 23, Davenport, NY 13750, for the Eric Merwin Memorial Scholarship Fund for graduating CVCS seniors.
