IN MEMORIAM: Donald Sternberg, 91;

Moved To Cooperstown To Be Near Son

Donald D. Sternberg

COOPERSTOWN – Donald D. Sternberg, 91, father of Dr. Richard J. Sternberg, the retired Bassett orthopedic surgeon, passed away this morning, Feb. 10, 2018, at Centers Health Care, the former Otsego Manor Nursing Home.

He was born on March 4, 1926, in New York City, son of Morton and Jeanette Sternberg, and attended Dewitt Clinton High School.  He enlisted during World War II, and served as a pharmacist’s mate at Parris Island, S.C.  Following the war, he attended the University of Wisconsin.

On Sept. 20, 1951, he married the former Nadine Fox.   The Sternbergs lived in Oceanside, L.I., before moving to Cooperstown in September 2016.  They had been residing at the Thanksgiving Home.

He spent his career in men’s clothing, as a salesman and later as a buyer for major chains, including at Macy’s headquarters in New York City.

Mr. Sternberg is survived by his wife, Nadine; two sons, Richard in Cooperstown, and Douglas in Oceanside, and five grandchildren, Dr. Sternberg’s two daughters, Marisa and Jeanna; and Douglas’ three children, Daniel, Jessica Crawford and Miriam.

Arrangements are with Gutterman’s Funeral Home in Rockville Center, L.I.  A gravesite service is planned Tuesday at Old Montefiore Cemetery, Queens.
