Duncan Powell Nesbitt, Sr., 76;
A Last Manager Of Family’s Mill
ONEONTA – Duncan Powell Nesbitt Sr., 76, one of the last family members involved in operating the West-Nesbitt Feed Mill, where Foothills is today, died unexpectedly on April 16, 2019, in Wilmington, N.C., where he lived since 2010.
He leaves his wife of 54 years, Rebecca “Becky” Rogers Nesbitt; and son Duncan Powell Nesbitt Jr. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Robinson; and brother, Ben Nesbitt, the retired banker, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Born and raised in Oneonta, he was the son of Gus and Mary Nesbitt.
He graduated from Westtown Friends School in Philadelphia, and received his degree from Furman University, Greenville, S.C.
After graduation, he served in the Army and received the Army Commendation Medal.
Duncan then worked in the family feed business until its sale in 1988. For the rest of his career he was with Insta-Pro, serving as national director of sales for the United States and Canada.
Duncan and Becky moved to Plantation Village in 2010. Duncan was an avid lifelong golfer and spent many of his happiest hours on the course. Since retirement, he was a coach for the Wilmington First Tee teaching children correct golf and life skills.
He also participated in many activities at Plantation Village. A warm and caring man, he will be missed by many.
A Celebration of Life Reception will be at Plantation Village from 2 to 4 p.m. on April 24. Private services will be held at a later date.
I always said the term Southern Gentleman referred to Duncan. He was a great guy, always fun to be around. Enjoyed his company for many years! He will be missed by all of us at Whole Harvest Foods!

I worked for West Nesbitt Feed in the Harpersfield store. I always enjoyed my job and Duncan was a great man to work for. My condolences to his family.
While attending Delhi Tech in 1966 I was playing on the college soccer team. After a game Duncan introduced himself, saying he heard the name Nesbitt called out and wondered who it was with his family name. It was in the fall and he was wearing a long dark dress coat. If I remember correctly he had a pipe? A very impressive man whom I regret not getting further acquainted with. Sometimes we are all too busy. My condolences to the family and friends.
Growing up in Oneonta I knew the Nesbitt’s well and used to come over to see Powell, Duncan and Becky’s son. Duncan was always very nice to me and my family. Rest in Peace.
