George Bruno, Clinton Envoy,
Will Address 85th Graduation
ONEONTA – George Bruno, Class of 1964, President Clinton’s ambassador to Belize (1994-97) and a champion for civil rights and democracy across the globe, will deliver the commencement address at Hartwick College’s 85th graduation at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 21, on Elmore Field.
Bruno served as President Bill Clinton’s Ambassador to Belize from 1994 to 1997. Today, he manages LawServe, a global immigration law firm in Manchester, N.H., and is a principal in USA Group International, providing consulting services to individuals, governments, and private business. His career as an attorney and public servant includes successfully arguing a case before the Supreme Court at age 29 to protect Social Security rights.
He has also served as assistant director of the Executive Office of U.S. Attorneys, and as Senior Advisor in the Army’s international office.
Bruno was awarded an honorary degree (1996) and President’s Award for Liberal Arts in Practice (2011) from Hartwick College, and the Daniel Webster international Lawyer of the Year from the NH Bar Association (2014) – among others.
The weekend-long celebration will begin with the President’s Farewell Dinner with the senior class on Thursday evening, followed on Friday by the Senior Art Exhibition Reception, and Nurses Pinning Ceremony. The Art Reception will take place at 11:30 a.m. in the Foreman Gallery in the Anderson Center for the Arts, and the Nurses Pinning Ceremony will be at 12:30 p.m. in Lambros Arena, Binder Physical Education Center.
The Class of 2016 will convene at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 20, for this year’s Baccalaureate Celebration in Lambros Area, Binder Physical Education Center. A Hartwick tradition, Baccalaureate student speakers Amanda Robinson ’16, Noah Jager ’16, and Lauren O’Brien ’16 will reflect on their time at Hartwick, and will be joined by Associate Professor of Education Dr. Mark Davies, who will offer parting words of wisdom to the soon-to-be graduates.
On Saturday, May 21, this year’s 343 degree candidates will undertake the transition from Hartwick students to Hartwick alumni during the College’s 85th Commencement exercise.
