Gibson Presents Medals

To World War II Veteran

U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson, R-19, poses with World War II veteran Donald Diamond, Central Bridge, a few moments after presenting him with a boxed set of all the medals the sailor earned during his service, which included the D-Day invasion. Diamond, now 90, enlisted when he was 17, and participated in the Normandy invasion when he was 18. Diamond, a coxswain, never spoke of his war experiences until approached by a reporter at a parade in Schoharie County following Hurricane Irene. His niece, Kathy Fallon, contacted the congressman's office, who was able to obtained a European Theater Medal, two stars; an American Theatre Medal, a Asiatic-Pacific Medal, one star, and a Victory Medal for his constituent. One of Diamond's son traveled from Washington State for today's ceremony, held in Gibson's Cooperstown office. (Jim Kevlin/AllOTSEGO.com)
