Assemblyman Salka:

Will Work Tirelessly For You

To the Editor:
As we start a new year, and new leadership for the 121st Assembly District, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who supported us in this past election. And for those who did not, I hope to gain your trust through hard work, accountability and service.
As we head into the 2019 legislative session, I look forward to working with my fellow legislators, regardless of their political affiliation, to further the interests of our communities and our great state.
There are going to be issues that require debate and the advocacy that Upstate representatives will have to fight hard for. It is my firm promise that I will work tirelessly for the betterment of our towns, villages and cities, and I will always keep the interests of the citizens of the 121st as my main focus and concern.
I would also like to thank former Assemblyman Magee for his long-time dedication to our communities.
As I have said during the campaign, I cannot do this alone. I will need the ideas and the energy of the constituents who have given me the honor to serve, and I will always be there for them. After all, I work for you.

Respectfully Yours,
JOHN SALKA
Assemblyman-elect,
121st Assembly District

New York’s new budget

Gas tax holiday, drinks-to-go a part of New York’s new state budget It appears drivers fueling up in New York will get at least a partial break from the state’s gasoline tax beginning June 1. The gas tax holiday looks like it will be part of a new state budget lawmakers expect to approve beginning later in the evening of April 7. Under the details available Thursday afternoon, it appears the deal will knock 16 cents off the price of a gallon of unleaded or diesel gasoline between June 1 and December 31. The dates would cover the bulk of…

A kind of tax holiday

Commentary: Don’t be fueled A few weeks back I wrote in this space about New York’s gasoline tax; predicting lawmakers from various corners would be calling for its temporary roll-back as a means to relieve the price at the pump. If I remember correctly, I confidently wrote that it couldn’t be done – that lifting the sales tax on anything, however temporarily, is too complicated, too much of a political and logistical lift. I also picked Iowa and Gonzaga for the March Madness championship, so there you go. Albany indeed made a liar out of me last weekend with a…

KUZMINSKI: Populism As American As Apple Pie

Column by Adrian Kuzminski, September 7, 2018 THE GOAL: ECONOMIC, POLITICAL FREEDOM Populism As American As Apple Pie Ever since the last presidential election the words “populist” and “populism” have been widely bandied about, mostly as pejorative terms. A populist politician, we often hear, is a demagogue who wins votes by inflaming the resentments and emotions of ordinary people at the expense of rational thought. Those who fall prey to populism are no more to be trusted, critics suggest, than the politicians said to manipulate them. It’s a curious feature of populism that it defies the normal left-right political spectrum.…
