New Quilt Square Commemorates

Hank Nicols’ Fight Against AIDS

Members of Cooperstown Boy Scout Troop 1254 poses a few minutes ago with a newly completed quilt square commemoration Hank Nicols, a troop member who contracted the disease in the 1980s while receiving blood transfusions to treat his hemophilia. The square – 3 by 6 feet, the size of a coffin – is the second one completed by Hank's mother Joan. His father, also Hank, is a troop leader. The troop then watched "Eagle Scout: The Story of Henry Nicols," an HBO film recounting how the young man announced his diagnosis 25 years aog, then campaigned for AIDS awareness before succumbing to the disease in 2007.
