N MEMORIAM: Philip J. Hoffman III, 87;

Served In Navy, 36 Years In Post Office

COOPERSTOWN – Philip J. Hoffmann III, who retired in 1986 from a career in the U.S. Postal Service, passed away on Sept. 22, 2017, at Focus in Cooperstown.

He was born on Sept. 7, 1930, on Long Island.  He graduated high school in 1948 and worked in the post office until 1953.

He then joined the Navy, serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS WASP and going around the world.

Phil was honorably discharged in 1955 and returned to his postal-carrier position until he retired in March 1986, when he moved to Roseboom.

He is predeceased by his wife Joan and son Jeffrey and is survived by his wife Betty; two sons, Phil IV and his wife Jeanie of Long Island, and Guy and his wife Robin of Putnam Valley; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Also, three stepsons, Ronnie, Donnie and Denny with wife Roma, three step-grandchildren, Dan, Darrell and Michelle, and great grandson Jaydon, all of Roseboom.
