Residents interested in the future of Otsego Lake and its surrounding watershed are being encouraged to review recommendations from the recently presented Otsego Lake Nine Element Watershed Management Plan and submit public feedback through Wednesday, October 9.
During a recent public forum, project consultants and members of the Otsego Lake Watershed Supervisory Committee outlined a series of recommendations aimed at protecting water quality throughout the watershed. The proposed measures focus on reducing nutrient runoff, sediment, road salt, and the spread of invasive species, while improving the overall resilience of the lake and its tributaries.
Watershed Planning Consultant Jacob Gillette emphasized the importance of public participation in shaping the final plan, encouraging residents, property owners, and stakeholders to review the materials and share their feedback.
According to WSC officials, presentation materials, a list of proposed best management practices and public comment forms are being posted to the WSC’s section of the Village of Cooperstown website. Community members are encouraged to review the recommendations and submit comments by the October 9 deadline.
The 9E Plan serves as a comprehensive roadmap for protecting Otsego Lake, the headwaters of the Susquehanna River and the primary drinking water source for thousands of area residents. Recommendations presented during the forum address a range of watershed concerns, including stormwater management, shoreline protection, stream corridor restoration, agricultural best practices, invasive species control and long-term water quality monitoring.
Officials say community input will help guide priorities as efforts move forward to preserve the health of Otsego Lake for future generations.
Those interested in doing so can review the materials and submit comments at cooperstownny.gov/the-otsego-watershed-supervisory-committee/.
