Suspect Arrested At D.A. Office

With Cap And Ball Muzzleloader

COOPERSTOWN – Village Police arrested a New Berlin man who showed up at the county District Attorney’s Office at 197 Main St. Wednesday evening armed with a cap and ball muzzleloader, according to Police Chief Frank Cavalieri.

Following an investigation, Theodore D. Canfield, 53, 211 Cobb Road, New Berlin, was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, a Class E felony, and issued an appearance ticket for February.

The events began at 7:16 p.m. Wednesday, when county 911 received a call from Canfield, saying he was at the D.A.’s office to get his investigator card.  Cavalieri characterized what happened  as a “suspicious person/mental health” complaint.

Village police, deputies and state troopers responded, and place Canfield in custody.
