IM MEMORIAM: Walter C. Engstrom, 83;

Nassau Police Officer, Laurens Postmaster

LAURENS – Walter C. Engstrom, 83, of the Little Red School Community, retired Laurens postmaster, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his own home on Aug. 22, 2017.

Walter was born on June 10, 1934 to the late Walter and Gunhild (Ommundsen) Engstrom in Brooklyn.  He joined the Army and served in the elite 82nd Airborne Division in 1952-54.  He married the former Lorraine Beuke on Sept. 17, 1955, in Baldwin.

He was an officer in the Nassau County Police Department before moving to Upstate New York, where he was Laurens postmaster.

Walter was an avid golfer and enjoyed his garden. The job he was most proud of though was that of being a loving husband, father and grandfather to a family that meant the world to him.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Engstrom; sons Gary (Edith) Engstrom, Gregory (Kathleen) Engstrom and Gerard Engstrom; eight loving grandchildren; sisters Charlotte Richards and Lillian Kiiroga.

At Walter’s request there will be no calling hours. A memorial seervice in memory of Walter’s life will be held at the convenience of his family at a later date.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.
