ONEONTA – Stanley Shaffer, chief operator of the city’s  Water Treatment Plant, has been received the 2017 Operators Meritorious Service Award from New York Section American Water Works Association.

The award will be presented at the state AWWA Awards Breakfast at its Annual Conference April 26 in Saratoga Springs.

During 37 years of service, Shaffer has ensured city water met or exceeded all public health standards, the AWWA said. “His dedication to researching new technology and process improvements has allowed the City of Oneonta to continuously improve its water quality while maintaining a low cost to the end user,” the announcement said.

“Even during many storm and flood events, including the 500-year flood of 2006, the City of Oneonta, due to Stan’s leadership and diligence, has had zero USEPA/NYSDOH water quality violations to date,” it added.

Because of Shaffer’s work, residents take it for granted their tap water will be health, Mayor Gary Herzig said. “Consistently providing for this important essential need makes us the subject of envy of many communities around the nation,” he continued.

“On behalf of the people of Oneonta, I say – Thank you, Stan.”
