Raise $3,100 For Cancer Fight
COOPERSTOWN – The Cooperstown Sports Booster Club, in combination with the Milford Central School Sports Booster Club, raised $3,100 for The Bassett Cancer Institute, the Cooperstown boosters announced today.
The “Homestand Against Cancer” event on Saturday was organized by the Cooperstown club and highlighted cancer awareness and research.
Four consecutive girls and boys basketball games were played in Cooperstown on Saturday while the gym wall was filled up with “Honor” and “Memory” cards listing the names of friends and family members who have battled cancer.
The “Courtside Couch” and halftime shooting games provided fun for all fans in attendance and continued to raise funds throughout the evening.
All players and coaches from Cooperstown and Milford took to the court between the girls and boys Varsity games for a special presentation by CCS players Carmen Booan and Mallory Arthurs to honor all patients and providers.
Josh Truman, Friend of Bassett executive director, praised the two schools for their collective efforts to go beyond wearing colorful jerseys, to raising funds for cancer care.
CCS graduate Jacinda Hall Conboy and her son Dylan, 7, spoke at center court to all fans just prior to the Boys Varsity game. Dylan has been battling Childhood Leukemia since he was an infant.
With a minute left in girls game, a standing ovation from the entire crowd at the CCS gymnasium stopped the game as it was announced that the Milford Central School Sports Booster Club donated $1,500 from their cancer awareness evening with Schenevus Central School the prior week in support of “Homestand Against Cancer”.
Mike Niles, Head Coach CCS Girls Varsity Basketball, stated “It takes the care and support of so many individuals to battle cancer. Milford and Cooperstown have come together to show their respect for all who have battled cancer and all those who work so hard to support the needs of cancer patients. It was a fantastic evening with so many people contributing. We couldn’t be more proud of these efforts.”
