But This Time It’s Caleb, Not Josh

COOPERSTOWN – A younger Edmonds brothers, Caleb, 22, took the baton from older brother Josh, 27, this afternoon, in the 5.6K Smullens Run, an annual high point of the Cooperstown Winter Carnival, (which wraps up with the Roald Dahl Carnival Closer at Mel’s, 22 Chestnut, beginning at 3.)

Josh, who has dominated 5K runs for the past couple of years, finished the run, from the flagpole, up East Lake Road, and back to Cooper Park, in 19:31, for second place.  Forty-four seconds earlier, Caleb had crossed the finish line in 18:47, first place.

The Edmonds 15-year-old sister, Heidi, came in fifth, at 24:43.  A third brother, Peter, competed in the 10K.  (Dad, Bassett doc Lee Edmonds, is a runner himself, getting the kids interested while they were growing up.)

It was a family affair overall, as the Daleys of Brooklyn, dad Thomas Sr., son Thomas Jr., and sister Danielle ran the 5.6K, with mom Patti and Danielle’s boyfriend Chris cheering them on.  The parents organized the trip to celebrate their wedding anniversary.

Harald Bredersen was cheered on from the sidelines by his wife, Rachel Criswell, and their 5-month-old baby, Louisa.  Bredersen is on leave from his job at the U.N. and tending the baby while Criswell completes her training as part of the Columbia-Bassett medical school program.

There was one runner from abroad, Rudy Callejas of Guatemala, who arrived back in Cooperstown just three weeks ago with his wife, Erica Collier.  He had run the Smullens four years ago.
