Delgado Sponsors Resolution

Celebrating Colgate’s 200th

Congressman Delgado addressed Colgate’s graduates in May.

Today, U.S. Rep. Antonio Delgado, D-19, and two of his colleagues introduced legislation applauding his alma mater, Colgate University, on its 200th anniversary.

He was joined by his Upstate colleague, Rep.  Anthony Brindisi, the Utica Democrat, and Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, a Colgate alumna and Democrat who represents the Philadelphia suburbs.

A member of the Class of 1999, Delgado delivered this year’s commencement address at the university, which has many Otsego County alumni, ranging from Attorney Michael Getman, the Oneonta city prosecutor, to John Odell, the Hall of Fame curator.

“My time as a student at Colgate University helped to shape the way I see the world and unlocked in me a love for studying philosophy and political science,” said Delgado, in announcing today’s resolution. “I was humbled and deeply honored to return to Colgate this year to deliver the 2019 commencement address and meet with members of the incredibly inspiring next generation of Colgate scholars.

“I am so proud to be a Colgate alum and have the opportunity to celebrate the bicentennial, now as a Member of Congress, by co-sponsoring this resolution,” he said.

Brindisi, whose district includes Madison County and Hamilton, where the university is located,  said, “Colgate university exemplifies all the best American higher education has to offer. It has produced many graduates of national acclaim, including business professionals, community leaders, Members of Congress and other government officials.”

Said Scanlon, “Over the last 200 years, the values that have guided the evolution of Colgate as a higher education institution have been instilled in its graduates.  Through continuous improvement, willingness to take risks, and valuing others, Colgate has fostered a learning environment that encourages students to utilize their liberal arts education as a platform to give back.”
