Makes It Official
Democrat Primary Possible In 121st
ONEONTA – Dan Buttermann made it official today: The Oneonta Democrat plans to challenge Assemblyman John Salka, R-Brookfield, for the 121st Assembly District seat, although he first may face a Democratic primary next June.
The 121st includes the bulk of Otsego County, including Oneonta and Cooperstown, all of Madison County and part of Oneida. The 2020 election will be Nov. 3.
“I am deeply concerned about the future of our district, state and country,” Buttermann said in a press release. “I fear that failure to invest in the future of our economy today means that our next generation of Upstate New Yorkers will find it harder and harder to stay.”
When Democrat Corey Mosher, a Hamilton farmer, announced Oct. 20 he is exploring a challenge to Salka, Buttermann’s treasurer last time around, Richard Sternberg, Cooperstown, said the candidate planned to run again.
Buttermann, an assistant casualty manager at NYCM, Edmeston, is on the Oneonta City school board, and the boards of OFO and Opportunities for Otsego, and the Oneonta Concert Association. He also organized annual TEDx events in Oneonta.
Additionally, Buttermann has served on the Oneonta Planning Board; is a member of the Oneonta Rotary Club, NAACP and Farm Bureau; performs clarinet regularly with the Oneonta Community Concert Band and the Catskill Symphony Orchestra; and teaches courses on negotiation and organizational behavior at Hartwick College. He was named one of “20 under 40” by the Otsego County Chamber of Commerce in 2015.
Buttermann graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Clarinet Performance, and later from Southern Methodist University with a Master of Business Administration degree. While at SMU, Buttermann was recognized as a Dean’s Circle student for his commitment to leadership development (90+ hours of course work with community and business leaders) and community service through Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Collin County, Prison Entrepreneurship Program (PEP) and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children Consulting Program.
