Dr. Ted Edmonds, 89; Optometrist

Leaves Survivors In Cooperstown

COOPERSTOWN – Dr. Theodore Charles “Ted” Edmonds, 89, father of Bassett Hospital’s Dr. Lee Edmonds, passed away Thursday morning, Nov. 26, 2020, at Woodside Hall in Cooperstown following a long and valiant battle with a pervasive form of Parkinson’s disease.

He was born on May 24, 1931, in Erie, Pa., the son of Glenn M. Edmonds and Mildred (Bolyes) Edmonds. He was predeceased by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 63 years, Carol Adelaide (O’Brien) Edmonds.

They married in 1952 and stared their life in Erie, where both attended Penn State University at the Behrend Center Campus. He started a career as a draftsman at the General Electric plant. He played the saxophone in a dance band and attended night school at Gannon College in pursuit of his lifelong dream to become an optometrist. He was accepted into the Massachusetts College of Optometry and moved the family to Boston where he graduated in 1966.

Upon graduation, the family moved again to Lewisburg, Pa., where Ted and Carol raised two sons, were active in in First Presbyterian Church and enjoyed a wonderful life. Ted practiced optometry in nearby Sunbury, Pa., where he helped many people see clearly and encouraged many young people to also pursue a career in optometry.

He was active with Boy Scout Troop 538 and guided many boys to the rank of Eagle Scout including both sons and several grandsons. He retired from optometry to pursue another lifelong hobby of woodworking and custom furniture. Many of his loved ones will long cherish his many projects.

In addition to Lee Edmonds and his wife Jean, of Cooperstown, Ted is survived by his other son and his wife, Scott and Susan Edmonds of Broomall, Pa. Grampa Teds was loved by and will be missed by his seven grandchildren, Ryan and Kim Edmonds, Chad and Dana Edmonds, Benjamin, Joshua and Jaime Edmonds, Peter, Caleb and Katy Edmonds and Heidi; and great-grandchildren, Asher and Ezekiel Edmonds of Cooperstown and Jackson and Savannah of Havertown.

He is also survived by a sister, Beverly A. (Edmonds) Potts of Erie, Pa.

A Christian memorial service will be held graveside in Lewisburg Cemetery at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, with social distancing and masks requested.
