George Edward Goetz, 90

Started Leatherstocking Theater Company

George Edward Goetz, age 90, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side at his home on July 25 in Shrewsbury Massachusetts.

George is predeceased by his father Henry E Goetz and Aureil Corkett Goetz and his love of his life, his wife of 61 years, Carolyn Lowe Goetz and his daughter Susanne Goetz , Kesnisington MD where she lived with her husband , Patrice Maleze.

George will be missed by his sister Virginia and her husband Jim Wagner of Westerville and their children and their families, his daughter Linda Goetz and her husband Kent Wittler and grandson Ian of Newton, MA and Jeanne Vumbaca and her husband Dino Vumbaca and grandchildren Max, Henry and Maya Vumbaca of Hopkinton, MA.

George was born in Brooklyn New York where he recalled many fond memories of family holidays with his family and friends. George received his bachelors degree from Long Island University and was inducted in the Army in 1952 with Division 1, The Big Red One, in Germany where he played on the Army Basketball team.

George and his family moved to Arlington VA where George received his Masters at George Washington University and began his love of teaching at Washington and Lee High School where he met Carolyn Lowe, a fellow teacher, and fell in love and married.

George and Carolyn relocated to Piscataway New Jersey where they raised their three daughters. George felt all education was important and many family outings were spent at museums, cultural and historical events.

George began is 30 year career at Columbia High School where he was a beloved and dedicated teacher and school administrator. Both George and Carolyn enjoyed a very active retirement by traveling to Central America to explore and learn about the Maya and throughout the US and Europe. They purchased a time share In Cape May New Jersey and a lake home in Cooperstown, where the family has many wonderful memories.

George and Carolyn started Leatherstocking Theater Company in Cooperstown which they and dear family friend Sam Goodyear ran for over 10 years. George continued to provide teaching at Rutgers university In Piscataway.

George and Carolyn relocated to Southgate at Shrewsbury to be near family after the devastating loss of their daughter Susanne.  George and Carolyn made many dear friends and became very active in the Southgate community.

A Celebration of George’s amazing life will be scheduled at a later date.  Donations may be made to the ACLU or a charity of your choice in George’s memory.
