IN MEMORIAM: ‘Big Jake’ Halter, 70;

‘The Deacon Knew He Had A Good Life’

ONEONTA – Big Jake, aka The Deacon, the Snake, Bopa Halter, passed on to the Big Party in the sky on June 23, 2016.

Born in 1946 to Jacob and Emilia Halter, he attended St. Mary’s Elementary school, and graduated from Oneonta High School in 1964. He enlisted in the Navy and served in 1969-71, and his work history included the D&H Railroad, the City of Oneonta and Amphenol; however, these occupations didn’t define him.

Jake was married to Carol for more than two decades, and together they raised a family and shared many wonderful experiences. Later, he spent almost 20 years with his companion, Linda Rae, expanding his family further, and creating more memories.

His friends will remember him as “The Snake,” an awesome player for the Copper Fox softball team, and later on as he taught his son and others how to play ball.

“Big Jake” was how all the kids in the neighborhood referred to him, for he was of big stature and heart, always sharing his cookies and hugs.

“Bopa” is how his grandchildren will remember him, and he had great pleasure and patience for a story, a play, or to build a Lego tower.

“Dad” is how his children will always know they loved him and were loved in return. He was a second special dad to Rachel, Jimmy, and Lauren.

A man of many talents – carpentry, exquisite hand-writing, maker of the best burgers – and a fan of music, Star Trek, Notre Dame, a good martini – we all know he had a simply refined taste in life and living. Those closest to him will miss watching the river and birds fly by with a cold beer in hand with him. He was a friend, lover, husband, father and companion to us all. He’d want us to remember the good times we shared, and at the end, he knew he had a good life.

He is survived by his puppy-girl, Mackenzie; his daughter Jessica Halter (husband Andrew Cooper); his son, Jacob Halter (wife Jaime); his grandchildren Alex, Shaylee, Drew, and wee Jacob; his brother Andrew Halter (wife Mickey); his sister Barbara Mazzoni (husband Luigi); his aunt Marianna Leib; Carol Halter; Linda Nichols; and many many other friends and family.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Susquehanna SPCA.

Calling hours will be Saturday July 2, from 11-1 at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand Street, Oneonta.
