Cooperstown’s Katz Joins Coalition

Of U.S. Mayor Vs. Global Warming

Cooperstown Mayor Jeff Katz

COOPERSTOWN – The Village of Cooperstown announced today that Mayor Jeff Katz has joined Climate Mayors (aka, Mayors National Climate Action Agenda, or MNCAA), a network of nearly 300 U.S. mayors representing over 60 million Americans.

Climate Mayors are working together to strengthen local efforts for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting efforts for binding federal and global-level policy making.

Since 2012, the village has adopted and implemented many initiatives to show our commitment to addressing climate change in ways that are appropriate to village life. We have increased energy efficiency, including converting many Main Street lampposts to LED (with more to come), met our electricity needs through the purchase of renewable energy, recently received a grant to install two EV chargers in the Doubleday Field parking lot, and were the first municipality in the country to divest from fossil fuels. We have successfully installed on-site solar-powered electricity at Three Mile Point and are still pursuing larger solar energy projects. Our Climate Change resolution has become a model for other communities throughout the state.

Climate Mayors recently released an open letter to President Trump to oppose his actions thus far against climate action. In January, 30 Climate Mayors issued an electric vehicle (EV) request for information (RFI) to show automakers and manufacturers that 114,000 of their cities’ cars and trucks could be electrified.

Mayor Katz has joined Climate Mayors to mutually strengthen grassroots-level, municipally-led activity on undertaking climate action by seeking cleaner, renewable energy sources and making our infrastructure energy efficient.
