Sam Glanzman, 92, Maryland;
Drew For Marvel, DC Comics
MARYLAND – Samuel (Sam) Joseph Glanzman, Town of Maryland, a prize-winning American comics artist best known for his Charlton Comics series Hercules, and work for DC and Marvel Comics, passed away July 12, 2017, of natural causes. He was 92.
Born in Baltimore, Md. On Dec. 5, 1924, to Gustave and Florence Glanzman, Sam was a professional illustrator and writer. Self-taught, Sam did free-lance work for such comic book companies as DC, Marvel and Charlton, Outdoor Life Magazine, and many others. Much of his work was a focus of the DC vs. Marvel analysis over the years that flourished online.
Titles he worked on throughout his more than 65-year career included G. I. Combat, Sgt. Rock, Hercules, Jonah Hex, Fightin’ Army, and Kona-Monarch of Monster Isle. His most recent work, published in 2016, “USS Stevens: The Collected Stories”, was nominated for the prestigious Eisner Award, the comics’ industry equivalent of the Oscar Awards.
Sam was a Navy veteran, serving on the destroyer USS Stevens during WWII in 1942-46. He would later use his memories and experiences during this time as inspiration for two graphic novels and dozens of short stories.
Sam was an accomplished carpenter and furniture maker throughout his life. He had a great love for nature and never lost his passion for boating and camping. He was a dog owner throughout his life and his canine friends would often make appearances in his published works. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and loved to explore the back roads of his beloved upstate New York countryside.
Sam is survived by his wife, Susan Ann; his daughter Bonnie Pewterbaugh; his sons, Steven and Thom Glanzman; his grandchildren, KimberlyGlanzman, Josiah and Benjamin Pewterbaugh, Ian , Jessica, and Alex Glanzman,; in-laws, friends, hundreds of fans and colleagues, many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Lou and David Glanzman.
