IN MEMORIAM: Wava H. Cuyler, 91;
Taught In Oneonta Schools 28 Years
ONEONTA – Wava Hatcher Cuyler, 91, who taught Oneonta children for 28 years, retiring in 1984 from Center Street School, passed away after a brief illness on Thursday July 13, 2017 in Oneonta. She was surrounded by a host of loving family members.
Wava was born in Oneonta on April 7, 1926, to Marvin and Edna (Lowe) Hatcher. She was educated at Bugbee School, Oneonta High School, and the State Teachers College at Old Main. She married George William Cuyler, Jr. on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23, 1944, at St. James’ Episcopal Church.
Wava was a communicant of St. James. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, American Association of University Women, the Oneonta Garden Club, and an avid volunteer for Reading is Fundamental. She enjoyed travel, gardening and reading.
Wava is survived by her devoted children: George William Cuyler III (Denise) of Oneonta, David Cuyler of Lafayette, Colo., and Alison Cuyler (James Seymour) of Glenville. She cherished her seven grandchildren: Jacqueline Jones and Karen Oliver (Tom) of Oneonta; Diane Cuyler of Troy, Michael Cuyler (Chieko) of Bristow, Va., and their mother, Ann Cuyler of Clarence; Daniel and Dylan Cuyler of Lafayette, Colo.; and Daniel Seymour (Kelly) of Burnt Hills. She took great delight in her six great-grandchildren: Christina and Abigail Jones, and their father Christopher, of Schenectady; Clark Oliver of Oneonta; and Kosei, May and Anika Cuyler of Bristow Va. Wava also held dear a daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Cuyler of Amissville VA; a sister-in-law, Margery Hatcher of Milford; and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Wava was predeceased by her husband George, her son Christopher, her brothers Marvin and Robert Hatcher, and her sister Edna “Peg” Seybolt.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday July 20, 2017, 11:00am, at St. James’ Church in Oneonta, with committal immediately after in the church’s columbarium. A reception will follow in the Great Hall.

Wava’s arrangements were entrusted to the Lewis, Hurley and Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta.
