IN MEMORIAM:  ‘Mickie’ Howard, 93; WWII Veteran

ONEONTA – Elva “Mickie” Howard, 93, a WAAC during World War II and later cook for 20 years in the Laurens Central School cafeteria, passed away on Wednesday morning at Fox Nursing Home, surrounded by her family.

Mickie was born on Oct. 22, 1921, in Blaine, Miss., the daughter of the late Clarence and Bertha (Barrett) Mitchell. She married Robert V. Howard on March 6, 1944.

She enlisted in the Women’s Army Air Corps on Nov. 12, 1942, where she earned the rank of corporal.

Before entering the nursing home, Mickie lived in Mount Vision, where she was a long-time member of the Mount Vision Methodist Church as well Laurens American Legion Post #1688.

She was an avid golfer and played in a league at Colonial Ridge (formerly C.J.’s).

In addition to her husband of 70 years, she is survived by her four daughters, Holly Deleski and husband, Michael, Joy Rotundo and husband, Sam, Natalie Klindt and husband, Alan, and Pamela Perkins and husband, John. Also, grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral service with military honors will be at 1 pm on Monday, Dec. 8, 2014, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, with Rev. Richard D. Howard, officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Vision Cemetery in the spring. Calling hours are 11 a.m. until the funeral.
