Less than nine minutes after the polls closed, the Associate Press called the gubernatorial race for Andrew Cuomo, the two-term incumbent and son of former governor Mario Cuomo, who was also elected for three terms.

The Democratic governor had been challenged by the Republican Dutchess County executive, Marc Molinaro.

With less than 1 percent of the votes counted, the New York Times also called it.  At that point, the governor had 2,733 to Molinaro’s 955.

AP also called U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand as the winner.  The Democrat faced a challenge from Republican Chelie Farley.
