BEWARE: NYSEG Scam

Targets Cooperstown

GreenDot cards are the preferred method of payment for scammers.

COOPERSTOWN – Police Chief Michael Covert is warning residents not to send money to callers pretending to represent NYSEG.

“We’ve gotten four calls today from people who received calls saying that they had to pay $998 on their NYSEG bill or they would be thrown in jail,” said Covert.   “It’s an ongoing scam.”

The callers then asked for the mark to go to CVS and get a GreenDot pre-paid card.  “Never send money to a caller asking for a GreenDot card,” said Covert.  “It will always be trouble.”

Two of the calls were reported by The Otesaga and the Heroes of Baseball Wax Museum.
