William Allen White, author of “What’s the Matter with Kansas?” and other well-known writings, declines without thanks the invitation to abandon the Progressive movement and return to the Republican Party. He says there are 2 million Progressives who feel as he does. “They don’t care,” he adds, “whether the Republicans whip the Democrats, or the Democrats the Republicans.” “The Progressives who have returned,” says White, “have their tails between their legs and they are making no fight for the things which interested the progressive Republicans four years ago.” “The Republican Party today,” he adds, “stands for the divine right of property to rule and the ideal that the richest country is the best country.”

William F. Streck, M.D., president of Bassett Hospital, has been appointed to the New York State Hospital Review and Planning Council following his nomination to the post by Governor Mario Cuomo. The group acts on issues pertaining to planning, fiscal policy, major medical equipment, project review, and code creation and revision. According to Mary H. Fairbanks, the Council’s chairwoman, Streck’s role on the council is unique because of his extensive experience in an upstate tertiary facility with numerous outreach sites. “Dr. Streck is one of three Council members from the upstate medical community. The other four physician members reside downstate, so Dr. Streck, as the only upstate rural hospital representative, will provide the Council with direction and views from this area,” Fairbanks said.
