In Our Town—The Otesaga Hotel closes on Friday morning after breakfast, having had the most prosperous season of its existence. The plan of keeping the house open through the entire month of September has been more than satisfactory to Manager Knott, the patronage having been far above his anticipations. The house was filled to its capacity over the weekend.

85 YEARS AGO
An $80,000 airport is proposed for Cooperstown as part of a program designed to assure an adequate nationwide system of landing fields essential to the national defense. The program announced Saturday by the Civil Aeronautics authority would give the state sixty Class One airports, forty-five Class Two, nine Class Three, one Class Four, and one seaplane base. The cost for improvements at 116 was estimated at $17,473,582.
Selective Service—The President, under the recent Selective Training and Service Act, has proclaimed October 16th as Registration Day for men from 21 through 35 years of age. Of some 16 million to be registered it is estimated that five million will be available for military training and service. The present armed forces are to be raised to approximately a million and a half men as rapidly as possible.
Robert Johnson has been appointed chairman and Ralph F. Finch and William Beattie the other members of the Committee of the Cooperstown Chapter of the American Red Cross Naval and Home Service. The function of the committee is to furnish cooperation needed to keep pace with the expanding forces of national defense.

Dr. A.F. Carson of Oneonta, who was re-elected Chairman of the Otsego County Democratic Committee at the latter’s biennial organization meeting at the Court House here Saturday night, told those gathered that the Republican Party was on the decline in the county and that a resurgence in the popularity of the Democratic Party was in evidence on the basis of voting patterns during the past eight years. Since the presidential election of 1956 Republican strength in Otsego County has declined by 3,000, while Democratic voters have increased by 1,800.

Plans for the expansion of the National Baseball Hall of Fame Library have been approved by Hall officials who are proceeding with final plans and cost studies. The proposed expansion will add 22,000 square feet to the existing 7,000 square-foot free-standing library, at an estimated cost of $5.6 million. The building will be named in honor of Bart Giamatti. “In the language of baseball fans, this library is like getting a new stadium,” said Hall Librarian Thomas Heitz. Mrs. Jean Yawkey, majority owner of the Boston Red Sox has made a $1.5 million grant to be matched from other baseball sources.

Diana T. Nicols will succeed Michael Crippen as Cooperstown Chief of Police. Crippen retires after more than 20 years as Chief and 27 years on the village force. Chief Nicols assumes command of a village department with nine employees, including the Chief, three full-time and six part-time. A separate full-time uniformed parking officer also reports to the Chief. Along with 5 years of frontline patrol experience as a police officer in the City of Oneonta and five years on the Cooperstown force, Nicols also has impressive academic credentials and has been called upon to instruct other officers.
